Homeopathic medicine has been used since it’s inception in the eighteenth century. Homeopathy stimulates the body to activate its own healing mechanisms in pursuit of homeostasis. Homeostasis is “the ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes”. Allopathic medicine (pharmaceuticals) treats disease by the suppression and regulation of symptoms or by attempting to destroy the microbes associated with the condition.
Homeopathy is based on the “Law of Similars” or “like treating like”. This law suggests that similar symptoms cause by taking a substance in its raw form can be alleviated by taking the same substance in a highly diluted form. This dilution follows the premise put forth by the “Arndt-Schultz Law” which states that substances vary in action dependant upon the concentration; high concentrations inhibit, medium concentrations suppress and low concentrations stimulate. Isopathy is similar to homeopathy, but is utilizes the “Law of Exacts”. An example would be using a homeopathically prepared pollen or grass to treat the pollen or grass allergy/sensitivity.
Homeopathy is a system of highly diluted substances that will alleviate effects caused by the same or similar substances in their non-diluted state. One example of this effect is the deadly nightshade plant (belladonna). If taken in its pure state it will cause high fever, dilated pupils and a throbbing pulse. However, taken homeopathically, it would be prescribed for someone who presents with a high fever, rapid pulse and dilated pupils – someone who has these flu symptoms would benefit from homeopathic belladonna.
There are certain guidelines for taking homeopathic remedies. Mints and camphor should be avoided as well as caffeine. These substances may render the formula ineffective. No food or drink or tobacco should be taken (or smoked) 15 minutes before or after a remedy. And remedies should always be stored in a cool, dry place away from any sunlight or electromagnetic influence (microwave, computers, cell phones, etc).
